Glen Canyon National Recreation Area AZ-UT Is located in the center of the Colorado Plateau and the grand circle of national parks in the four corners region, named by the one armed civil war veteran and explorer Major John Wesley Powell as he explored the Colorado River through Glen Canyon and The Grand Canyon in 1869 and then again in 1871. Powell described in his published diary …wonderful features−carved walls, royal arches, glens, alcove gulches, mounds and monuments. From which of these features shall we select a name? We decide to call it Glen Canyon. The recreation area was established in 1972 and is operated by the National Park Service.
The National Park Service maintains two full service RV sites near the beach. Nine miles from Page‚ Arizona‚ on the west side of lake Powell just across the Utah state line on Highway 89‚ Lone Rock offers vehicle accessible primitive camping on the beach. Dominating the view is a huge monolithic rock‚ the Lone Rock. Activities here include swimming‚ boating and the only designated ATV area in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Park entrance fees apply as well as a nightly camping fee.
